The P-40-F and P-40-L variants were powered by Merlins V-1650-1. When the Merlins wore out they were replaced by V-1710-81 engines and the planes became P-40-Rs. The Merlins had 1300hp. and the Allisons had 1200hp. The XP-40-Q had a V-1710-121 of 1425hp. and had a top speed of 422mph.
